I just keep laughing.
So, a lot of people who are involved in gender issues, feminism and gaming will have heard of Anita Sarkeesian and her “Feminist Frequency” project. It kinda took over all sorts of social networks with a blast and caught my attention at first.
But the more I saw Anita’s work, the more it rubbed me in all wrong ways, until I started avoiding it all together. But it still appears on my twitter and tumblr dash through others. And the latest development is that Anita is getting death threads because of her work.
Of course it’s horrible that she has to leave her house and that she and her relatives can not feel safe. But to be honest I don’t think that what she is doing is worth all this risk.
Because essentially what she is doing is, she takes video games from the first ones that were revolutionary for the industry like “Legend of Zelda” and “Mario” to the newest ones and basically saying that they are shit, because saving a female character from a villain is a bad plot driver. And then there are these updates like “By now we catalogued XXXX thousand games that are totally unfair to women”
Honestly, I as a female gamer don’t give a flying fuck who is a lead character in the game and who I have to save from what. I play game if I like it and if I don’t it’s not because I referred to Anita’s super catalogue of female injustice. Because according to her the only socially acceptable game is probably snake and balloon shooter.
And then I realised why I hate her work.
It’s because she is just criticizing work of others. Period. It’s nothing else, just pure critic.
If she said: “Right guys, this is what is wrong with aaaaaall these games, so I did my science and came up with this ultimate game scenario that is absolutely amazing, fun, there is adventure and shooting and romance and plot twist and, most importantly, it’s 100% female friendly!” then it would be something worth fighting for and backing on kickstarter and paying attention to, otherwise, what is the point of it?
I think all that money she is spending on criticizing work of others could do waaay more good if she actually went and helped real women in trouble in real world.
